BMW's 2018 lineup showcases an emphasis on performance and an increase in prices to match. The M series underwent several changes, most notably a few trim upgrades for the M4 and a new turbo V8, 32-valve, 600-hp engine for the M5 paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission and specialized all-wheel-drive. The X2, the latest subcompact crossover, also debuts this year. This model receives inspiration from the M sport and is available in two trim levels, both of which include a 2.0 Twin Power Turbo inline four-cylinder engine. Other models, such as the X3 and Z4, receive greater safety and performance equipment to enhance the driver experience. New to the 5-series is the 550i sedan that features a 4.4-liter M performance V8 engine, an 8-speed sport automatic transmission, and all-wheel-drive, thereby making it a more powerful version of the 540d. In anticipation of the 8-series that will return next year, a four-door hatchback 6 GT has been released to replace the 5-series GT. Finally, the manufacturing of the M6 coupe has ceased.
