The BMW i3 with Range Extender increases your electric driving range by up to 75 miles to eliminate range concerns, allowing you to breathe a little easier on those trips where a charging station is not readily available. This model, with a two-cylinder combustion engine, generates electricity that maintains the charge of the lithium-ion battery at an approximate 5% charge level.

Brake Energy Recuperation

During the development of the BMW i3, particular emphasis was placed on brake energy recuperation to allow for optimum range in various driving situations. If the driver takes his foot off the accelerator pedal, the electric motor assumes the function of a generator and feeds the energy gained from the motion of the wheels back into the high-voltage battery. This system generates a braking torque, which leads to an effective deceleration of the vehicle and contributes to energy savings in preparation for multiple driving styles.

Lithium-Ion High-Voltage Battery

The energy supply for the electric drive, as well as all other vehicle functions, is provided by a specially developed lithium-ion high-voltage battery, which sets new standards in terms of energy efficiency. The intelligent heating and cooling system of the battery ensures that its energy—and thus, the vehicle’s range—is less affected by temperature fluctuations than it normally is with batteries of this type. As such, it makes a significant contribution to both the performance and service life of the cells. An 8-year limited warranty or 100,000 miles is given for the high-voltage battery.

eDrive Motor

The electric motor of the BMW i3 was designed for instant power, delivering 170 hp with a torque of 184 lb-ft. The full torque, which is typical for electric motors, is immediately available from a standstill and does not need to be built up first via the engine speed, as is the case with internal combustion engines. This gives the BMW i3 particularly high agility in various situations and impressive acceleration values: the BMW i3 accelerates from 0 to 35 mph in under 4 seconds and to 60 mph in approximately 7 seconds (7.8 seconds with Range Extender). A specially developed heating and air conditioning system ensures as little temperature fluctuations as possible, which significantly increases its service life.

Carbon Fiber Reinforced Plastic

The passenger compartment of the BMW i3—the LifeDrive module—is completely made of Carbon Fiber Reinforced Plastic (CFRP), which is an especially light and high-strength material that provides outstanding protection to passengers in the event of an emergency.
